The anniversary of the Russian statehood. 1612, 1812

On the eve of 2012, there was opened an exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812.

The invasion of our Homeland by Napoleon’s half-million army and the thread to the very independence of the state gave rise to our citizens’ readiness for self-sacrificing fight for their Homeland. The nation rose to fight. The war of 1812 was a truly Patriotic War. Its main event was the famous battle of Borodino, which went down to history as an undying symbol of the courage and valour of the Russian army.

That war ended with the complete defeat of Napoleon’s army that had been invincible before. It showed the great strength of the national spirit, the heroism of the Russian troops, and the talent of military leaders. That war had a tremendous impact on the entire Russian society, too.

Many artists of the XIX-XXI centuries responded to that important event in our history. They were guided by high patriotic thoughts. They sought to show the great feat of the Russian people.

The war of 1812 was not just Napoleon’s war against Russia. In fact, it was a Eurtopean war since almost all stated of the continent appeared to be involved in it/ but France and Russia were the key combatants.
